![]() IRELAND: Great news for the Irish at home and abroad today as IrishTv announced they will be starting a new channel that will create 150 new jobs. The Mayo based channel is the latest project from husband and wife team, Pierce O'Reilly and Mairead Ni Mhaoilchiarain. In an interview with RTE News, Pierce said that that the new station will feature 50 home-produced programmes a week. The project will have the backing of Mayo-born multi-millionaire John Griffin, who will act as chairman. Griffin recently sold the UK's largest minicab service, Addison Lee, for €360m. Together the trio have purchased Sky Channel 191 for the venture. "Each of the 32 counties will have their own half-hour 'County Matters' show" DIASPORA
As well as being available to Sky and Freesat viewers in Ireland and the UK, programmes on the new network will also be made available to audiences in the States on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and online via IrishTV's ongoing website IrishTV.ie and on IrishTV.com. COMMUNITY At home the emphasis according to Mr O'Reilly will be on community and localised news content. "Each of the 32 counties will have their own half-hour 'County Matters' show once a week, produced by IrishTV's own nationwide production network. We are putting three-person teams in place in each county to produce them." According to O'Reilly local programming will cover topics such as cooking, music, fashion, farming, sports, childrens' programmes, golf and entertainment. While news coverage will be taken from the RTE Digital Service. JOBS It's expected that the 150 new positions will include presenters, camera operators and editing staff and will be based in locations across Ireland, the UK and the US.
